Rhythm X Presents: The Man in the Arena

On April 23rd, 1910 Theodore Roosevelt gave a speech entitled Citizenship in a Republic o a crowd of thousands in Paris. An excerpt of that speech, known commonly as "The Man in the Arena" has inspired millions since then:

It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.

The 2013 Rhythm X production is based from this quote. Our show is about fighting: fighting for a worthy cause, a goal, n aspiration or simply for your life. Interestingly, its a concept that applies to the path of a performer as well. Roosevelt says that although the man in the arena may fail, he fails while "daring greatly."  Our show isn't simply about working hard, its about working the hardest, taking risk, and standing up after you've fallen. 

Musically our show has two influences. First is the second movement of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto. The second is Survival by Muse, which not-coincidentally draws its inspiration from Rachmaninoff. On their latest album, The 2nd Law, the prelude to Survival is a variation on Rachmaninoff's theme. Interestingly, Muse's song was chosen as the official song of the 2012 London Olympics. The lyrics to Muse's song, sampled in the closer echo our effort for success, and survival,

In our 2013 production you'll find every member of X13 fighting for "the triumph of high achievement" and "daring greatly."  We all know the "great enthusiasms, the great devotions" of our activity and at the WGI World Championships in April, Rhythm X will be fighting for them in the arena.
